I had to purchase this book as a class text and I must say I enjoy reading the content. I got the kindle version, and as another reviewer said, the pictures are all too small to see clearly, so I do not benefit from whatever they are trying to convey. While I must skip all pictures, even while reading on my 17 inch screen laptop (they are just so small) I must mark it down a star. Otherwise, the author is easy to read and understand, writes in a manner that is enjoyable (is not boring and does not feel like a text book) and has great advice and examples about making your websites cater to the user experience. Like another reviewer, I found it ironic that the author teaches about user experience and accessibility yet includes "too small" photos and diagrams for the digital version of the book -- swings and misses big time there. I think it is a handy, well written text book on creating concise, clear website content that any web content creator will benefit from. I wish I had bought the text version instead to keep around for future reference. I recommend.
I write web copy for a living and love this book. Why?Because it's:1) Practical - I use the advice here almost every day at work writing copy for websites.2) Evergreen - Even as websites evolve, nothing here will go out of style. You may add on to it, but this is truly evergreen content.3) Clear - The book practices what it preaches, presenting the information you need with lots of subheads and bullets. If you write anything that goes on a website—or even plan what goes on the website (like a content strategist)— the buy this book.P.S: If you have the first edition, this book is still worth buying. They added tons of extra content.
This is an excellent book on how to: structure a page, write content and generally make your site more professional.Letting go of the words is a very practical, easy to read book. In our organization it is the foundation of the best practice guidelines for writing for the web.Once you have read Ginny's book you will be eager to put her suggestions into practice. And, that's when the creative block sets in. You can easily fix the glaring errors on your own website and this is a great place to start. But to create truly remarkable content go and get yourself Inbound Marketing: Get Found Using Google, Social Media, and Blogs (The New Rules of Social Media). This book will make you think about what you are writing or have written. With 'Inbound Marketing' in hand your content style will change for the better and by applying Ginny's principles you will have an amazing site. For me, much of this new style of electronic marketing has come together with the books I mentioned. But when you add another thought provoking book like Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery, not only will your presentations take a new twist, but when you extend the principles of imagery to your website, the images you select will truly enhance the written content. At our next conference, our presenters will present using the Zen techniques and no longer be giving out handouts, instead content will be written as blogs on our website for all to share and easily access. These books nurture creative thinking and pragmatic solutions!
Writing web pages is different than writing essays or research papers or even white papers. It is really visually based. It is a hard concept for me to understand, but the author really helped me to be able to improve the way I write up my web pages. I used to use too many words on a page now I can see that less is better. And also using boxes and other visual cues helps the reader's eyes know where to go on the page, so they will not be bored. Excellent book! Best one on writing web content.
A little bit too dated for my liking. The example websites are very old, and none of the current design trends are represented in what is shown or described. Yes, the description of putting things into lists, etc. are still correct, but I think a lot of it was written for the way people interacted with the web 5-10 years ago.
I'm using this as a textbook for one of my web design classes. This will be one of my textbooks that I keep when class is over. It has a lot of handy information for those needing more information on what types of content to put on their websites, and how to organize it. It will help make your website more user friendly, and provides a lot of examples to understand why some things work and others don't. Highly recommended.
I'm a professional advertising copywriter and this book has given me some wonderful advice. Better still, it has given me the ability to speak more authoritatively at input meetings and the respect is nice. It highlights common mistakes and generally illustrates how to ensure the website you write will better than most of the competitors. Hell, maybe all of them! If you've written websites or are about to write your first, this is recommended reading.
THIS book is a miracle of editing. I really LOVE it - every page is interesting.
