Smith's immediate neighbors where jazz musicians and others involved in the visual and performing arts. Now Stephenson has closed the circle with "Gene Smith’s Sinkâ€, which I loved just as much. I especially liked the rhythm and flow of the book. It is simply one of those books you feel compelled to read in one sitting. What better way to understand a person than through conversations with multiple people who lived with the man. If you love the arts and want a greater understanding of how its practitioners think and work, by all means read this engaging book.
FANTASTIC book about one of my photographic heroes. No photos, just biographical text. Photos can be found elsewhere. Insights to Smith's career and mind set abound. Highly recommended for geeks interested in Smith himself and not necessarily wanting yet another monograph og images.
If you have not yet read this book, you HAVE to do so. I've never read anything like it. It is an incredible product of an incredible research project. It is a study of not just Smith, but an entire creative community of complex people. It is simply astounding to me that someone could make something like this book happen. To me, it is "mind bending".
